Blogging 101: How to Improve Your Alexa Ranking
How to Improve Your Alexa Ranking - Increase your Alexa Rank and boost your website traffic! Here are some tips to improve your Alexa Ranking. Learn how to drive more traffic to your site.
What is Alexa Rank and why should I care?
Alexa Rank is an internet ranking system that measures the level of traffic each website receives from the number of people who visit a website with the Alexa toolbar installed. It is based on three months of aggregated historical traffic data from millions of Alexa Toolbar users and is a combined measure of page views and users (reach). As a first step, Alexa computes the reach and number of page views for all sites on the Web on a daily basis.
Where can you get your Alexa Rank?
Here you can find the Alexa Rank of your own site.
Also, if you are interested in how you stack up against the competition, you can install the Alexa Traffic Chrome Extension, so you can quickly see the rank of any page you are visiting.
Why does Alexa Rank matter to me?
If you are not trying to monetize your site you probably don’t need to care much about Alexa. But for those of you who are looking to work with advertisers or ad networks, it is kinda a big deal. Now, a lot of ad networks or Company PRs are going to want to see a Media kit which might include your google analytics, (which I highly recommend installing whether you are looking to monetize or not. You will find instructions on this HERE.) Social Media Following, and Alexa ranking. Alexa rankings are uber inefficient but are pretty much the only way others can compare you to other sites. The lower the number, the more traffic that the site gets and thus the more people that ads can be served to.
What information does Alexa use to measure your site?
-Traffic from people that use the Alexa Toolbar
-Number of page views
-Time spent on site per visitor
-Bounce Rate and CTR (Click-through-rate). Learn how to increase your CTR.
-Quality and Diversity of the views
-Number of inbounds links to site (also known as backlinks)
-Social Media share, likes, comments count
-Site Load Speed (which leads to visitors not leaving your site so quickly)
-Site UX/UI
Do Alexa Rankings affect SEO or traffic?
There is no direct correlation between SEO and Alexa Rank. However, a lower Alexa Rank might show websites that have their Alexa Rank under 10k, are probably enjoying a good chunk of visitors from the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page).
How many views do I need to be on the top 100,000 sites on the Alexa Rank?
That's the 64 thousand dollar question. It all has to do with the Alexa Toolbar. I have seen people report receiving 25 thousand page views a month and being in the top 100K. On the flipside, I can attest personally we have been near 2 million unique page views and still not crack the 100K mark. It is all dependent on the Alexa toolbar. I've seen a lot of numbers thrown out there but I think here are some rough numbers for a month of traffic:
Top 100,000 = 150-200 people with Alexa Toolbar installed per day.
Top 50,000 = 300-350 visitors per day.
Top 20,000 = 450-550 visitsrs per day.
Top 10,000 = 750-850 visitors per day.
Top 5,000 = about 1600-1800 visitors per day.
This shows you the flawed system that is Alexa Rank.
Good news it is gameable. You can fake it until you make it.
What is a good Alexa Rank number?
Again, depends on your niche. This site is in the food/recipes niche. Hooked up with a decent ad network 100K Alexa rank should provide you with 150K-200K dollar revenue per year. I think that's a pretty good rank. On the other hand, you will have tech sites in the top 50K Alexa that cant pull in half of that. So its all objective.
Conclusion about Alexa Rank
Convincingly worthless, easily manipulated, but...Ad networks, Public Relation Managers, your peers(who will look up to you and share your content) like I said before, a fake it until you make it opportunity.
Tips to Improve Alexa Rank
-Install the Alexa toolbar. HERE is the link to install the Alexa Toolbar. Who is going to view your site more times than you during the day? This will be the biggest step in improving your rank!
-Obviously creating awesome new content, but that's what your doing already so there is no need to go into that.
-Stated earlier Alexa is objective, so if your not already a tech site writing about it already do what I am doing here. Create an article about Alexa. Alexa ranking is heavily skewed towards websites which are tech sites. This is because their visitors are much more likely to have the Alexa toolbar installed than say food or fashion sites.
**Remember Alexa is a three-month average so don’t expect to shoot up overnight. You have 90 plus days of old data to replace with new data.
