Why You'll Love This Recipe
My pantry and fridge are filled with homemade versions of pantry staples. I make my own salad dressings, pasta sauces, and seasonings. There is a condition: they need to be easy to make. This homemade Taco Seasoning is just perfect! I made a version that is as close to the store-bought kind as I can, without any additives. I add cornstarch because I like my taco meat saucy and thick. You can use this seasoning as you would a packet of seasoning.
Ingredients needed:
- chili powder
- cumin
- garlic powder
- onion powder
- dried oregano
- paprika
- salt
- pepper
- cornstarch

How much does this recipe make?
This recipe can be used to make 4 meals (with ground meat or chicken). Use 2 tablespoons just like you would use a packet of store-bought seasoning.
How to store this seasoning?
I store it in a jar with a lid. You can also use a small ziploc bag. Write down with a sharpie pen what it is so you will know you are using the right seasoning.
How to use homemade taco seasoning:
For every pound of meat, use 2 tablespoons of seasoning. If you are looking for the thick saucy taco mixture, add the cornstarch to the seasoning mix and add ½ cup of water to the meat. Simmer until thick.

I love having my own taco seasoning on hand bc I know what's in it. I made this recipe 1.5xs bc i got like having bulk n it turned out that all the measurements came out in Tbs so I didn't have to even get out my tsp, that's a total bonus to me bc I hate that lol. So if u would like to make a jar full as I do here's the measurements:
6Tbs chili powder,
4Tbs cumin,
1 Tbs garlic,
1 Tbs onion,
1Tbs oregano,
2Tbs paprika,
1 Tbs salt,
1 Tbs pepper
4 Tbs corn starch

I have been making my own taco seasoning for quite some time but have never used cornstarch. What is the purpose of the cornstarch?
Anna says
Hi Paula! My goal was to make a homemade version of the taco seasoning packet you can buy in the store. It has cornstarch or a thickening agent. Once added to your dish along with the water it thickens. I hope this helps! You can always leave it out if you like.
