This homemade Sazon Seasoning is so easy to make from scratch with spices you already have in your pantry! Popular in Latin cooking, this spice mix is a great addition to any dish.
Add this seasoning to my Black Beans and Rice or the Instant Pulled Pork to take it to the next level!
Homemade spice mixes and condiments are my jam! I used to buy the Goya brand of Sazon seasoning in packets but now I prefer to make my own. It's super easy and I already have all of the ingredients in my spice rack. This spice mix adds delicious flavor to any Mexican dish I make!
Ingredients:
- ground cumin
- ground coriander
- ground achiote
- garlic powder
- dried oregano
- ground turmeric
- salt and pepper
What is achiote spice?
If you are not familiar with this spice, it is ground annatto seeds (from the achiote tree), a common ingredient that adds orange-red color to dishes. You will find it in chorizo sausage but also cheddar cheese. If you can't find it in your grocery store or market, you can buy it on Amazon. A good substitute is a mix of turmeric and paprika (not Hungarian or smoked).

Does the achiote have a taste/flavor? Can I omit it? I have all the other ingredients except this one. Thanks!
Anna says
Hi Julia! You can use equal parts of turmeric and paprika in place of achiote. The flavor of achiote is subtle pepper so this combo will work well. I hope this helps!
