- In a small mixing bowl, whisk together sour cream, salsa and cumin. Add to salad and toss gently.

I stopped buying canned black beans because I can easily make a big batch of them in my Instant Pot. For instructions, follow my Instant Pot Black Beans recipe. It's a fail-proof method and works every time. You need 1 cup of black beans for this salad recipe, or use one 15 oz. can. Don't forget to rinse and drain the beans well.
Substitutions for this recipe:
I always love to hear from our readers who make our recipes and use ingredients they have on hand in substitutions for those stated in the recipe. Here are some suggestions you can try:
- meat: use ground beef OR ground turkey, chicken on cubed chicken.
- vegetarian: You can also skip the meat altogether and make this into a vegetarian meal by adding sauteed mushrooms;
- cheese: skip cheddar and use shredded Pepper Jack for added heat;
- veggies: add avocado, black olives, chopped bell peppers or jalapeno pepper;
- dressing: drizzle it all with nacho sauce.
The dressing:
To bring all of the ingredients together, I used the dressing recipe from my Black Bean Taco Salad. It's a simple mix of salsa, sour cream and ground cumin. For another option, you can use Catalina Salad Dressing.
Storing:
Absolutely! Simply toss the chopped veggies together and keep in a glass bowl covered with saran wrap. Cook meat with seasoning and beans and store in a separate container with a lid. Heat up meat mixture before serving.

Very good recipe! Just finished my bowl!! My daughter suggested that we add cilantro and a bit of lime juice to the dressing mixture next time. I’ll try that and let you know how it is.
Thanks so much for the fun dinner idea!
Anna says
Fantastic! I am so glad it was a hit!

We absolutely love this recipe! I’ve made it twice now. The only thing that I did differently was to add the Doritos right before we ate it because they got soggy the first time!
Anna says
Yay! That's fantastic! I am so glad the salad is a hit! I agree about the Doritos. Good tip! 😀

This is almost exactly the way I make my taco salad! I use chopped green onions instead of red onion, and instead of dressing, I just mix a jar of salsa in the meat mixture before adding the meat to the salad. No extra dressing needed!
Allison says
Are those green onions on top? It looks like it, but I don’t see them listed in the ingredients.
Anna@CrunchyCreamySweet says
Hi Allison! I just used them as garnish for the dish while taking photos. You can definitely use them but it's not required. I hope you love this salad!
