Candied yams are one of the most popular holiday sides. If you are a fan of sweet potatoes like me, you will love this recipe. Just the scent of the brown sugar and spices glaze will make you hungry. So, forget the canned stuff and try these Candied Sweet Potatoes this season. It's the easiest side dish you will make, in just 3 easy steps: cut the potatoes, make the glaze and bake!

    Ingredients:

    • sweet potatoes: at least 3 lbs
    • butter: I used unsalted butter
    • brown sugar
    • spices: ground cinnamon, ginger, cloves, nutmeg OR pumpkin pie spice
Ingredients for the dish on a board.

How to make Candied Sweet Potatoes?

    • Start by peeling potatoes. Cut them into 1/2" pieces.
    • Mix butter, sugar and spices in a bowl and microwave in 20-second increments, until butter is melted. Whisk well. Microwave for 20 seconds, stir again to make sure the sugar dissolves.
Brown sugar glaze in a glass bowl.
    • Place potatoes in a greased 2 qt baking dish.
    • Pour sugar mixture over potatoes and stir to coat.
    • Bake in 375 degrees F oven for 20 minutes, stir, bake 20 minutes more, stir again and bake for 10 more minutes.
    • Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 10 minutes.
    • Serve.

    Expert tips:

    • spices: if you don't have individual spices, use a pumpkin pie spice mix. It's perfect for this dish! In a pinch, just ground cinnamon will do.
    • potatoes: if at all possible, try to use potatoes that are roughly the same size for even baking.
    • toppings: add marshmallows or oat crumble if desired.

Can I make this dish ahead of time?

You can easily prep the dish by cutting the potatoes and tossing them with the sauce. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and store in the fridge until ready to bake. Make sure to coat the potatoes well or they will dry out. Let the dish sit on the counter to come to room temperature before baking in the oven.

    Storing leftovers:

Any leftovers should be stored in a container with lid in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat easily in a microwave.
