    Why This Method Work

If you have an air fryer, enjoy using it for various recipes, and now wonder if you can cook a raw steak in the magical appliance, the answer is short and delicious: yes! Yes, you can cook a really good, juicy steak in the air fryer. I was surprised too! It's quick and easy and saves you the mess of frying it in the pan or preheating the grill. Simply rub the steak with oil and seasoning and let the air fryer do the work!

    Ingredients:

Ingredients for air fryer steak on a marble board.
    • steak: any works in this recipe, I used ribeye with bone
    • steak seasoning: use your favorite or mix garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, sugar

How to cook steak in the air fryer?

Raw steak seasoned on a plate and in the air fryer basket.
    • Start by patting the steak dry with a paper towel. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt, pepper, and your favorite steak seasoning.
    • Preheat your air fryer and place the steak in the basket.
    • Air fry steak for 12 minutes, flipping it halfway through.
    • Serve with garlic herb butter, steak sauce, and your favorite sides.

How long does it take to cook a steak in an air fryer?

From my testing and experience, we got the following:

    • for medium rare, cook steak for 8 minutes
    • for medium  to medium well, cook steak for 12 minutes
    • for well done, cook steak for 14 to 15 minutes.

As with any appliance, the results may vary depending on your model. Test the recipe and adjust it to your preferences.

    Expert Tips!

    • Pull the steak out of the fridge and let it come to room temperature before air frying.
    • After cooking, let the steak rest for about 8 to 10 minutes before serving, to let the juices redistribute in the meat. Otherwise, they will escape and your steak will be dry.
    • Choose a steak that has a good amount of marbling, meaning the fat distributed in the meat.

    What to serve with steak?

We enjoy steak with baked potatoes, French fries, coleslaw, onion rings, etc. Go for easy veggie sides and don't forget garlic butter or your favorite steak sauce!

    Storing leftovers:

I recommend storing leftovers in a container with a lid, in the fridge, for up to 3 days.

    Recipe FAQs:

Can I cook frozen steak in the air fryer?

I always thaw steak completely before cooking. It is easier for me to control the results. Some chefs will never use a steak that was frozen but it always comes down to the quality of the meat. If you are following my recipe below, I recommend a fresh steak or one that is completely thawed.

Do I need to turn the steak?

The air in the air fryer circulates so there is no need to flip the steak. It will cook through.

What cut of beef should I use?

This method works for any steak: ribeye, sirloin steak, NY strip, etc. Keep in mind, that thicker steaks may require longer cooking time. Always check with a meat thermometer.
