RICE KRISPIES PIRATE TREASURE CHEST
Now that we have a boy, my Hubby is happy to be done with castle cakes and ready to go all in into boy themed cakes and treats. He designs them, I bake and together we assemble the pieces. When I told him that I need to make a party treat in either fairy or pirate theme - he voted for the pirate theme. With both hands. Can you tell he was excited? 🙂 Both of my boys love pirates!
After a little brainstorming, we came up with the idea of using rice krispies treats for two reasons: I have been making RKT's for the last two weeks and they are so easy to cut and stack and eventually build something from them.

HOW TO MAKE A PIRATE CHEST OUR OF RICE KRISPIES TREATS?
Isn't it like the coolest thing made out of rice krispies treats you have ever seen? Yeah, we are quite proud of it. 🙂
THE RICE KRISPIES TREATS RECIPE:
You have to start with a good rice krispies treats recipe. I used my browned butter version because I love it and because it's delicious!
THE DIMENSIONS:
The recipe states to make it in a 9"x13" pan. For this treasure box you will need two pans: one 9"x13" and one 8"x8". The thicker one (square 8 inch) will be for the bottom of the box. The thinner one (9"x13") for the top. You can make 4 to 6 treasure boxes using the two pans.

To make the bottom, you need to cut out a 4" by 3" rectangle from the thicker rice krispies treats. Using a sharp serrated knife, trim the edges slightly towards the center to make a trapezoid, to imitate the shape of a chest.
Place the bottom part of the chest over the thinner rice krispies treats and cut out the top for the chest, matching the dimensions. Trim the sides the same way, to make a box that looks like a treasure chest. Don't forget to eat the scraps - a bonus fun part of making this chest! 🙂
Make sure the bottom and the top of the chest match.
Now you need to cut out the inside of the bottom of the chest. Using a sharp paring knife, make cuts about ½" from the edge of the box. Cut out the inside and eat the scraps. You can use a spoon to scoop out the inside but we found the pairing knife works the best. Do not cut deeper than ½ inch.
Use the bottom of a small spoon to press down the sides of the inside of the box to make it smooth. It is very easy as the rice krispies treats are very easily shape-able. Now you have a box, ready for the final decorating.
DECORATING:
I used melted chocolate and a squeeze bottle to make the lines and the latch of the treasure chest. To make sure the lines match and you can still open the box, hold the box closed when making the lines and gently open right after you made the bottom lines. Make the latch with the box slightly open. You can fill the box with lots of treats, like little candy, M&M's, gold chocolate coins or white chocolate covered popcorn, as we did here. You can add a few drops of the melted chocolate in the back of the box to hold the top and bottom together, but we found it unnecessary.
ASSEMBLING:
These boxes really don't take much time to make and the kids love them! They are sure to be the hit of the party because they are fun, you can fill them with treats and they are 100% edible!! We also used fruit leather to make treasure maps! I remember seeing this idea in some cooking show and we thought it complements the box really well.
