How to make Potato Chips in the Air Fryer?
- Start by peeling potatoes. Slice them thinly using a knife or a mandolin.
- Place in a large bowl and cover with water. Soak the potato slices for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Line a large sheet with paper towels and dry the slices.
- Place potatoes in a clean bowl, drizzle with oil and season with salt. Toss to coat.
- Spread in a single layer in the air fryer basket or rack.
- Preheat air fryer to 350 degrees for 4 minutes.
- Place racks inside and cook for 12 minutes.
- Flip the chips and bake for 3 to 5 minutes more. This will depend on how thick you cut the slices. Some chips will be done after the first 12 minutes. Just remove them into a bowl and cook the rest.
How to slice potatoes for chips?
There are two ways you can slice potatoes when making chips. If your knife skills are good, you can slice them thinly, so each slice is so thin, it's almost see-through.
If you have a mandoline and would prefer to use that, adjust it to about 1/16" and slice.
Keep in mind, that thinner slices will cook faster. Try to keep them the same thickness, as much as possible. You may still end up with thicker and smaller slices, especially close to the ends of the potato. That's okay! They will still work great.
Do I need to flip them?
I recommend flipping the chips after 12 minutes, then baking again for 3 to 5 minutes. It ensures that both sides of each chip cook perfectly.

Why do you soak potatoes in water?
Soaking in water helps remove the starch from potato slices. It prevents sticking and helps create perfectly crispy chips. It is also recommended to soak potatoes when making fries.
Why are my chips soggy?
There can be two reasons for soggy chips: the slices were not thin enough OR the cooking time was too short. You can test on a batch of a few chips to see if you like the result and adjust as needed.
What if the chips fly around in the air fryer?
The chips can fly or move on the trays, especially when the air fryer activates the fan stronger during the cooking process. I did not notice this to be a problem. My chips still cook perfectly. Just place them back on the tray, when you are flipping them.
How to season air fryer potato chips?
I prefer to salt the chips just before air frying. You can add other seasonings as well. The seasoning tends to stick better to oiled, raw potato slices than finished chips.
How to store air fryer potato chips?
I recommend storing them in a ziplock bag or a container with a lid. Just as you would with store-bought chips, you don't want them to sit exposed in a bowl, or they will go stale.
