Donut Monte Cristo Sandwich Recipe - fresh from the bakery glazed donut with honey smoked ham, mayo, Swiss cheese and red currant jelly make for a strange but delicious combination!
Today, we are partnering with Hellmann's Mayo that challenged us to create a fun and "strange" sandwich. We present you our take on the classic Monte Cristo sandwich but with a DONUT in place of bread! I know, I know but you will have to trust us and just try it. It really is delicious!
Monte Cristo is a sandwich with ham, cheese, sweet jam, toasted up and dusted with powdered sugar. We eliminated the last few steps by getting fresh glazed donuts from the bakery section of our grocery store. This "strangewich" is sweet and savory in the same time and we love it!
Our whole family had a TON of fun participating in this challenge. We all brainstormed and had a list of "strangewiches", each one more weird than the other. It was so funny to see the kids come up with ideas of unexpected toppings or fillings for something simple like a sandwich. Kids have a wild imagination and it really did show! Gummy bears and nacho chips, anyone? ?
My Hubby's idea of using a donut in place of a bread was quite genius, if I may say so myself. I love it! But we didn't stop the weirdness there. I used a red currant jam and he used a jalapeno pepper jelly. The addition of spice took it to a whole new level! But wait! It's not over yet! We decided to make this sandwich two ways: cold and hot. Few minutes on the skillet and the ham and cheese were morphed into one hot gooey goodness.
However you make it, we hope you love this "strangewich" of ours! It's unusual for sure but the flavors are wonderful together. Enjoy!

Hi. I have heard of these sandwiches but never had one so I am definitely a newbie. Can I use any other cheese ?

this sounds delicious!! and if you think about it, it definitely makes sense. the doughnut is bready and fried, so you don't have to fry the sandwich after assembly, and it's glazed so you don't need to dust it with powered sugar!
