  • ¾ cup milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 12 bread slices see note

  1. If you want to keep the fried French toast warm, preheat the oven to 250° F. Prep a sheet pan.

  2. In a shallow dish (pasta bowl works great), whisk milk, eggs, salt, sugar, and vanilla. Whisk until smooth.
  3. Preheat griddle. I use a cast iron skillet because it distributes the heat evenly and creates a perfect texture.
  4. Melt a little bit of butter in skillet.
  5. Dip each bread slice on each side, do not let it sit in the mixture.
  6. Place dipped slice in a skillet and fry for 2 to 3 minutes.
  7. Just before flipping, sprinkle the un-fried side with about ¼ teaspoon of granulated sugar.

  8. Flip the slice and fry on the other side.
  9. Place fried slices on the prepared sheet pan and keep warm in the oven or serve right away.
  10. Serve French toast with maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh fruit, fruit sauce, or whipped cream.

Recipe Notes

  • I used brioche, but any thick-sliced bread works. Do not use regular sandwich bread. It is too thin and your French toast will be soggy.
