for the apple filling:

  • 4 cups chopped or sliced apples Granny Smith or Golden Delicious
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

for the topping:

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted and cooled
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  1. Butter a 2qt or 8" square or round baking dish.
  2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine apple slices with lemon juice. Toss gently.
  4. Add cornstarch and toss gently again.
  5. Add granulated sugar and cinnamon and stir in.
  6. Spread the filling in prepared dish.
  7. In the same large bowl, whisk oats and flour.
  8. Add brown sugar, cinnamon and cloves and stir in.
  9. Melt butter in microwave. Let it sit in room temperature for 10 to 15 minutes to cool. It will not solidify.
  10. Pour butter over oats topping. Mix with a fork.
  11. Sprinkle topping in crumbles over apple filling.
  12. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes.
  13. Remove the foil and bake for 10 to 15 minutes more.
  14. Serve warm with ice cream.

Recipe Notes

The most recommended are firmer apples because they don't fall apart into mush during baking. I used a mix of Golden Delicious and Granny Smith. If you are using softer apples, cut down the baking time by 1/3.
