Easy Skillet Caramel Apples are a must this fall. Great as pancake toppings, crepe filling or and addition to your morning oatmeal.
If you are like me, you have tons of apples sitting on your counters, filling the fruit bowls. If you are like me, you love apples and caramel together.
If you are a fan of oatmeal in the morning, you also know how quickly it can get boring. Season fruit to the rescue! Always!
During summer, you add fresh berries or sliced peaches. Fabulous! During winter you add nuts and dried fruit, but we are not there yet. Let’s enjoy the fabulous fall season and use apples and cinnamon to jazz up our boring breakfasts.
And not only breakfasts! Pancakes, waffles or crepes anyone? 🙂
This recipe is so ridiculously easy but a definite must to make this season. Just a simple way to use apples in your breakfast and desserts. All you have to do, is cook them with butter and cinnamon until soft and then bathe them for few minutes in brown sugar and cream until they turn into glorious skillet caramel apples. I also chop them and saute with brown sugar and spices and use as a layer in my Cinnamon Apple Cake. So tasty!
- 6 Tbsp unsalted butter
- 4 medium apples (I like to mix them: 2 Gala apples, 2 Granny Smith apples), washed, cored, sliced
- 1/2 c brown sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves (or nutmeg)
- 1/2 c heavy whipping cream
- Melt butter in cast iron skillet.
- Add apple slices.
- Sprinkle the apple slices with cinnamon and cloves.
- cook until soft but not mushy.
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together brown sugar and cream.
- Pour over apples.
- Bring to bubbly over medium heat, stirring constantly.
- Remove from heat.
- Use as topping for oatmeal, pancakes or waffles or as a filling for crepes
